Wow, there has been a lot of greatness in these pages, but that 3D effect is awesome.

Love your splash pages, JB. Wonder if old mate is lining up a pickup truck with a tow chain...

I love the details in the art - the flattened sign, the Senienl's sole, 'Curly'.

Also like the lettering touches such as 'STARS' and the THONK's.

Such a great start to a new book. Simple and yet menacing.

JB, you are so good at drawing "non-super" scenes. The clothes, foliage, truck and other "regular" elements are so well done that when a man shooting ruby beams from his eyes and a woman riding the winds and wielding lightning show up, those things are all the more incredible!

Thanks for noticing, Wallace. It’s a point I have tried many times over the years to impress on wannabe artists. As I put it, we can teach chimps to draw characters in skintight suits. But what we really need is people who can draw jeans and t-shirts and business suits and uniforms and offices and apartments and cars and trucks and all the other elements that make up the real world. The mundane stuff that makes the super super.

JB would really be a great fit to adapt Stephen King, especially some of King's early short story collections.

JB,

On page one, how did you draw the guys to be in the correct positions, and composite them with the previously drawn image?

I used my artograph to lay in the rough outlines of the background, then penciled the figures. Then I photoshopped in the original panel, enlarged.

Dave,
I absolutely agree with you on the reference to Stephen King. He and Mr. Byrne are (for me) two "page turners", who perfectly describe human beings, through superheroes or supernatural stories. Two great authors who have built an impressive work that is both popular and who have taken their art to a level difficult to match.
(hoping that JB appreciates SK, otherwise the compliment might not be appreciated ... in any case it's just an opinion)

Today's page is once again fabulous (the backgrounds !). As always with JB, the drawing of the eyes (for Jean) is incredible.

I’ve been compared to King before, mostly because I like to take ordinary things and make them weird.

Bit of trivia for some: these Jean pages were among those I jumped ahead to draw, so that they would not stagnate in my head. So they were actually drawn MONTHS before the rest of the pertinent issues.
