Louise Simonson tells of working with a hot young artist who one day informed her he wanted more “quiet” scenes. “Like when Claremont and Byrne would have the X-Men go to the soda shop.”

So, she included such a scene in her next plot.

When the art came in, the scene was nowhere to be found, replaced by a big action scene.

Weezi asked the artist why. “Quiet pages don’t sell,” he said.

Wow. Does the artist really have that level of autonomy?

Well I've heard (and believe) that art is the process of seeing, which is why, I suppose I do have such trouble drawing as I can't always visualize what I want to draw...

And some artists no matter how skilled do seem to fall into drawing the same body and/or facial types for the bulk of their characters.

This is certainly not so with you, John. Most of your characters have very distinct facial features which I'm guessing takes quite a bit of thought and effort...

It is noticed and appreciated, so thanks once again.

At some point it became a go-to complaint that all my faces look the same. True, in the early days, of my “heroic” males and females, but of the hoi poloi not so much. Not that truth was ever a major concern in the weaving of Bad Byrne stories.

I always loved how you drew faces, especially the eyes.

I remember as a kid, I randomly got a subscription to Fantastic Four, not knowing you were leaving the X-men. I was devastated when I found out with issue 145 that you were no longer on X-men, but when I got to page 3 of the first FF issue that had arrived in the mail, #233, and I saw Sue Richards face... I instantly knew life was going to be ok again.

(in those days i rarely read the credits first)

I have a Dark Phoenix Saga question, but I think it may be relevant to the current story.

After exploding the D'Bari star and then destroying the Shi'Ar starship, Dark Phoenix then decides to go all the way back to Earth.  Up to this point, it appeared that Dark Phoenix was heading to the M'Kraan Crystal.

Why the sudden change?

If I am wrong about the relevance, I am sorry to sidetrack the discussion.

The crystal was referenced when she consumed the star.

Then Claremont wrote:  "She craves that ultimate sensation . . .    . . . and will pay any price to achieve it again."

The story does not state that she is heading there, but it would be a logical choice if that sensation is what she is after.

But she does not continue on whatever that journey was. She heads back to the Earth again.

JB, for purposes of this story, was Jean the first mortal being with which the Phoenix bonded?

••

A typical example, then, of Chris writing more than was in the art. Ignoring the art, really. Which he did a lot.

That would seem likely.
