Possibly both. It was a duplicate of Jean that became Phoenix. The real Jean was in suspended animation at the bottom of Jamaica Bay, where the shuttle crashed.

QUOTE:
We've seen the Phoenix occupy the 'faux-Jean' body in the original run for a long period of time, and more recently Lilandra, a squirrel, a fox, a bear, and police guy - all for more than a few seconds, and while the status of the quadrupeds is unclear, the police guy doesn't SEEM to have come out too badly. |

I thought Phoenix was intentionally "burning through" Elaine's body (or showing that) in order to encourage Jean to give it hers. I may have misread that though.

Yup. I misread it.

Hi Wallace -
I had a similar thought today after sleeping on yesterday's page...
A couple of follow up questions occurred to me, but I'd better keep them to myself (for now at least) as they might head off into speculation-territory.

I love how Mac & Heather do look younger, but not grossly so. Obviously they would've met Logan years before the current storyline, so some aging has to have happened. Funny - showing slight differences in ages (10 years or less) is something one can rarely tell is done in comic books. I suspect most artists have too much trouble with it so just don't do it (see many Legion of Super-Heroes stories where the teens are either a foot shorter than adults, or look just like fully grown adults for an example). I love when artists can show us appropriate ages without going to extremes or counting on the editor adding a blurb saying '10 years before today' or something like that.

With this “origin” I’ve been avoiding referencing specific years, beyond the one that started the tale, and real world specific times such as WW2. Allows for greater elasticity.

John, in the original run, during the Wendigo arc, you drew a panel with a Logan from the past who looked significantly younger during his time with the Hudsons. What factors nudged you toward this older version in Elsewhen?

That’s more a stylistic change than anything else.

I see. At the time it came out, I read the image in the flashback as a possibly teenaged version of Logan. The shorter hair made it feel that way.

There was no point during my original run that I saw Logan as a teenager, even in flashback. From the beginning I was pushing him further and further back, along with Sabretooth.

Looked like he had gotten a trim back then, maybe some sort of regulations...
I'm still sorry for that bear the Phoenix used... poor bear, it was just doing it's bear thing and zappo! Squirrel and fox too. :^(
These things did not happen in Mark Trail!
