LINKA pleasant enough “review” that manages to avoid speculation. Two of my personal favorite panels on display. If memory serves this was the issue (might have been 260) in which I had gotten specific permission from Shooter to have Sue say “Damn you, Doom!” DC was being pretty free with the D-word, and I thought it would work in this context. Perhaps Shooter forgot, or perhaps the editor was acting unilaterally, but when the issue was published Sue’s line had become “Curse you, Doom!” Cuz, you know, people talk like that. No consultation with me, of course.

The Classic X-Men reprint:
Tom DeFalco was EIC by the time it was reprinted, so I guess he was even more restrictive than Shooter!
I first read the reprint instead, and 15-year-old me was confused by what the hell "hades" was.

I still wonder if Chris ever took a stopwatch to his dialog!A very early piece of sage council I received was to read aloud what I wrote. Partly to see how it sounded, and partly to see how long it took. (Reading aloud also avoided odd lines like "My name is FUCHS! That's pronounced FEWKS!")* _________________ *In ALPHA FLIGHT I got around this little pitfall by having Madison Jefferies mispronounce Bochs' name at "Botches", and having Bochs correct him.

I think it was a post by JB that set my mind to looking for colour muddles.
By that, I mean, compare the two panels above.
The original has contrasts which make it easy to see figures, foreground,
water, sky. Colours may not be natural, but the composition is easy to see.
The reprint, by comparison, is just a sea of green.
Green sky, green water, green Sauron, green water on Ororo.
What’s what? Where does one end & one begin. & the pink on Ororo’s
clothes doesn’t help either.

Further piece about the colouring (& the language). I’ve just checked my
digital Epic collection, & the panel is much more the first one rather than
the second one, & includes the word ‘Hell’

Well, the XM 115 image is restored. There's no way this is the original coloring, right?
Neither is perfect, and yeah, the "classic" is a sea of green. But Wolverine pops out of it (seriously, he looks bigger) and Sauron looks much better. I like seeing his eye and his toenails.

The CURSE makes it so the mind inserts what it wants, like, say, the F Word,
instead of exactly what is intended. Screw, even, is more offensive to Damn
IMO. JB’s Sue just isn’t that crass, but, she knows the difference between
Heavenly and Hellish.

FF 259 & 260 are two of my favorite comics of all time. They have maximum nostalgia factor for me as they were published and I read them the summer I turned 12. They checked all the boxes on art, inks, story and cool covers. I still go back and enjoy them every couple of years.

FF259 has perhaps the finest FF cover of the whole of JB's run. Such a cast iron classic image of Doom (ha! no pun was intended).
It wasn't the first issue from that run that I read, but it was the first I bought as a back issue US import (some of JB's issues were reprinted as part of Marvel UK's Secret Wars II).
It stuck with me through the years to the extent that when I commissioned my first piece from JB, it was of the FF vs Doom and Terrax.
As was the way things work when you collected kids as a comic, I didn't get my hands on #260 for a year or two after #259.
