JB, do you think there are any lessons that current Marvel editorial should take from the commercial success of Elsewhen?

Yes. Study the publishing history of the company’s first twenty years.

There are lessons there about how to do it RIGHT, and what went WRONG.

Just came across a recent X-Men Writers panel on YouTube where ELSEWHEN came up that's really torqued me, mostly for a ridiculous analogy used.

Another writer couldn't grasp why JB would do such a thing, and quipped that he's (the writer) got an NFL Superpro story that he's been dying to revisit 30 years later.

JB's a member of the very tiny subset of comic book writers that are also accomplished artists. In fact, by page count to this day, JB is the #1 record holder in pages that are written and drawn by the same person - by a wide margin. I don't forsee that record ever being broken, given that for over 25 years straight, he was writing and drawing 2 titles per month at the same time, an output rate that any other writer/artist has barely ever acheived (I can only think of Jack Kirby from the early-late 70's).

The key point that was missed is that the origins of ELSEWHEN came from the artistic side - something this other writer could never understand or accomplish.

It's also another case of a writer not understanding how another person could be more "noble" than they are.

Not to mention that X-Men is not Superpro. At least the panelist pointed out that Volume 1 sold out, so clearly there was outside interest besides JB's alone.

The most obvious reply to the nonsensical video that you’ve referenced is
that nobody has been asking for an NFL Superpro revisiting.

I’m reminded of Bobcat Goldthwait’s statement, as he casually mean one’s
completing filming for Police Academy 3….. “you know, to address all of
those unanswered questions from Police Academy 3”.

YouTube, and the internet as a whole, has led to many little egos seeking
out attention, handing a public mic to anyone wanting to pick it up.

Found another YouTuber saying the Death of Phoenix came about because Shooter ordered it. At least one person in the comments offered a correction, but the persistence of this myth* remains one of the more annoying annoyances of my career.

_______

* I hadn’t heard this one, but apparently Shooter modified his mangling of the truth by saying he knew CC and I were “bluffing” with our decision to kill Phoenix, but he forced us to go through with it, and live with the consequences.

Consequences being some of the most visually and emotionally powered
pages in comics history, as well as passionate conversations taking place
over 40 years later…….. that’ll teach ya!

Most amusing to see ELSEWHEN listed on Amazon as “not currently available”.

I saw Marvel is publishing a "Marvel Brick" of the entire JB X-Men run:

Get the Brick, then get the three volumes of ELSEWHEN?

It is charitably a brick, yes. Hopefully its on the old school paper with old school coloring.

And then give me one of the JB FF run, which I already have multiple versions of, but that's OK.

It reminds me of the compendiums DC has been doing. And the GI Joe
Compendiums.
