> I have a younger brother, so we played make believe for sure. <

Darn you, Matt! You always got to be Batman, then. I had an older brother and I was always stuck with Robin. Grrr...!

-----------------------------
Being the younger brother (my younger sibling is my sister) I always played the sidekick. I tend to prefer the sidekick/supporting members of a group or cast. The leader types are too dull. The sidekicks get more character! Is there a tendency in this related to birth order? Might be fodder for another thread?

Having siblings is such an alien concept to me.

Like Andrew, I recall a lot of imaginative play, but no "imaginary friend" like the ones I've heard and read about other kids having.

Knowing you as long as I have on this forum, I think we’d get along just fine
in real life if you ever got out of that hellhole known as Tennessee!

I have no doubts as to that

_______________

I know being an only child has been discussed here, but I was just wondering (because having an only was so much more rare in the past) if your parents dealt with criticism for it. I've known people, mostly older than me, who are extremely opinionated on such things.

Giving birth to me almost killed my mother, so people were understanding of my solo status.

Good of them to be understanding! After going through a high-risk pregnancy (mono-amniotic twins) I was asked about having more kids. I could never imagine going through anything close to that again, or putting my wife through it! I hear people criticize women who don't want to have kids or be pregnant. But I tell them it's a life-changing event that can be a very scary ordeal. If you aren't really committed to it, taking a pass is totally understandable. I do think younger people are more accepting as different lifestyles are more common nowadays.

Same.

Even as a small kid, when asked if I didn't wish for a brother or sister my answer was always a resounding "No".

In almost every classroom or social group I've had there were no other only childs, so I thought of myself as a rarity.

But when I went to advertising/creativity schools and courses, the percentage of only children increased significantly.

In this forum as well, I guess being a only child increases the chances you're a reader or likely to be creative (we had to make our own fun, after all).

Definitely has some real arthouse horror vibes, now that you mention it. Would have to be a period piece to really nail that genre...

Maybe Zavid returns and you have to defeat him in the present as an adult...

Stephen King would probably sue you but it'd definitely be a cool story, ha.

That discounts the creative effort we all had to find within ourselves.  I think only children give themselves way too much credit for things that multiple child households also have.  Imagine if you were one of seven or ten, not uncommon when I was growing up.  You had to find an identity separate and apart from six or eight other people all within ten years of you.  Nightmare!  Even in my household of four, it was a chore to carve out enough of a space to feel like me.  Can’t imagine cramming in six other people.  You just have to become creative in other ways.

As I said, I was in a family of four (two parents, two brothers) and was a voracious reader.  I don’t think that has anything to do with family size or lack thereof.  I’ve known people who are only children who hate reading and people who have three siblings who love it. My mother was a reader and passed that on to me.  My brother…not so much. He came late to reading. Really late, only liking it well into his 30s, but me? I’ve been a fan since I have memory.  I hardly think family size has a lick of bearing on whether you enjoy the act of reading.

I never did. I think I tried to once because I saw it on a kids TV series, but I was just copying what I saw and didn't believe it.

I'm thinking of those Family Circus comic panels where the kids are blaming invisible 'Not Me' and 'I Don't Know' for things.

Also wondering if Señor Wences had imaginary friends when he was little!
