Mike Benson: "This seems like a shoehorn to me, to put it mildly. I mean, Reed as water? And, aside from most civilians referring to him as "the rocky guy," what does Ben really have to do with earth? Sue as any kind of air elemental is also quite a stretch. Johnny, I'll give you." Jeez, Mike, didn't you read JB's first solo FF book, which quite clearly delineated which member corresponded to which of the four elements? Why, it's practically required reading 'round these here parts...

Apropos of that Comic Reader cover (and also, I guess, at this point, connected to JB's comment on Angel's bland mask), I am struck yet again (just as I was when I first saw it around these parts) by the fact that Wolverine, who normally pops out in images he's in, is entirely anonymous here. In fact, the first time I saw the cover (and for the record, I think it is an amazing cover), it actually took me a while to figure out who it was supposed to be. (I guess, the height was the give-away in the end. That and the fact that the others were accounted for when one made a headcount.)
Oh, and Lars, I like that homage too (and it's interesting that you opted to keep Wolverine's "ears" on your version of his uniform mask, apropos of what I just mentioned).

Has anyone ever drawn any non-X-Men in the original X-Men uniforms? I don't know why, but I'd love to see the FF or some of the Avengers wearing them.

It is hardcto reconcile those early X-Men pages with how Magneto is later portrayed. Everytime I hear about Magneto's past in the concentration camp I think about the panel above where Magneto formed an army of neo-Nazis of his own and wonder how could this be the same character.

1. How in the world could Chris Claremont justify changing the character to such an absolute other, almost impossibly different than his Jewish creators obviously intented? And I mean, obvious -- like a volcano erupting! Whew. That kind of self-indulgent break with the past was a stab in the very heart of comicbooks.
2. Love the sheer madness Kirby depicted in Magneto's eyes.
3. Can't help but think of STAR WARS when the X-Men face the roadblock.

There's tons of abused people who repeat their abuser's behavior. I don't think it's that far out of an idea. And survivor or not, Magneto is a crazy lunatic.

In the HEROES FOR HUNGER book, there was a nice vignette on this survivor/wannabe dictator "dilemma" of Magneto´s. Of course, the fact that Richard Corben was drawing helped a lot.

If you check Peter Wyngarde's IMDb page, you will find this mentioned among the trivia! ++++The comic book Wyngarde looks more imposing.

And survivor or not, Magneto is a crazy lunatic.•• A pocketsized psychobabble response that overlooks the fact that the Holocaust was not about the abuse of an individual -- it was about the abuse and intended annihilation of a whole People. As the wife of one editor observed, after having seen the first X-Movie, being a Holocaust survivor is the origin of a HERO, not a VILLAIN -- and however much whitewash is poured on, Magneto is not a hero.
