This thread has generated some disjointed thoughts.
First, many people really like the character of the Scarlett Witch. Why? Is it that she is fun to draw? Is it fun writing her? From a fan perspective, are her stories better? My problem with her is her powers. I just don’t “get them.” What really does she do? And, is it magic or a mutant ability? If it is a mutant ability, how can it work with magic? Granted, these questions really don’t need to be answered, but they create problems for me with the character. The other problem is that it seems like writers love to abuse Wanda, and in the process have made her powers more and more powerful. She has become the M.U reset button, if you will.
Regarding Daredevil . . . I love the splash page. What great action and energy! Regarding the commission, I don’t like that I think of the Daredevil movie when I look at it. The costume as inked doesn’t “represent” the red I know is there. These are minor quibbles though, as it still is a beautiful art, regardless of what it makes me recall.
Finally, regarding the anecdote regarding drawing Wolverine gutting Cyclopes. Having read it twice, I find my impression of what JB wrote changed from one reading to the other. The first time I read it as a dig against people who want drawings of characters that are “out of character”. But the second time I read it as a slight slam against Terry Austin for changing the original piece, or in other words manipulating the original author’s intent. Perhaps the point of the post is a little of both. This got me thinking about creators letting go, whether it is with a character they created, or in this case a piece of artwork. How challenging must it be, especially in the comic industry, to create something that one knows will inherently change based on the medium chosen?
Again, I apologize for the disjointed nature of this.
