What I love about Byrne-Women -- inter alia! -- is the singular nature of their faces. They are beautiful, no doubt, but quite unique, admitting of special, even idiosyncratic physical features that distinctly set them apart from each other. You can't mistake Wanda for Jean Grey, and both are the better for it!

My problem with (the Scarlet Witch) is her powers.  I just don’t “get them.”  What really does she do?  And, is it magic or a mutant ability?

***

Once upon a time, Wanda was a mutant who had the simplest power you could imagine. If she pointed at someone (often accidentally) they had bad luck. That was it. That was all. They had bad luck.

Later, she learned "real" magic, from Agatha Harkness. A mistake, I felt.

Still later, it became necessary for some of the more ARFs to explain her power more "realistically", so instead of "bad luck" she "altered probabilities". I hated that, but I used it nonetheless, as the basis for my story in AWC. I wanted to demonstrate just how far reaching "altering probabilites" really was.

Hi everyone

I'm new here. Obviously (from my being here) I like JB's work (first comics I ever read, in french, was an X-Men comics by JB)

The Daredevil piece is mine. I can't say how happy I am

Thanks to Jim and JB for this wonderful commission. I love it

I asked JB for a "moody DD" because this piece is to be included in an article I'm writing for Back Issue magazine. This will be issue 21 (shipping mid March) focusing on DD by "moody artists" :Miller, Janson, Mazzucchelli and John Romita Jr (cover by Mike Zeck). A lot of art, interviews... and I wanted a piece by JB because...well, because I like his work

JB, I hope this is ok with you if I use this piece in the mag? (I asked Jim to ask you)

Please note that this is not a self promotional post, I just want you all to know were you'll be able to see this beautiful piece in print.

I hope to talk to you all soon here

The costume as inked doesn’t “represent” the red I know is there.

I think Daredevil's costume is supposed to be black.

As to the Hawkeye/Scarlet Witch, I read Hawkeye's look to Scarlet Witch as "can you believe what they did to us in Avengers Disassembled?"

JB-

Thanks for the response regarding Wanda and her powers.  I can imagine how writers could not be satisfied with Wanda's powers being "only" the ability to create bad luck. (As an aside, someone in Las Vegas should have hired her!).

I concure with you that making her learn "real" magic, simply because her name is Scarlet Witch is completely misguided.  Make her a magician or a mutant, but not both.

As a further aside, Scarlet Witch, as originally conceived, is the inverse of rarely seen (again) character Shamrock from Contest of Champions?  Correct?  How many other characters deal with "luck".  Longshot?  Who else?

Roulette from the Hellions also had luck powers, and I think there have been some other characters from Longshot's world who may also have luck powers (in particular, I'm thinking of Shatterstar).

On the DC side, there is Amos Fortune, the Luck Lords from the Legion of Superheroes, and Tao Jones of Helix (foes of Infinity, Inc.) all had luck related powers.

For some reason I find it baffling that there are lurkers out there (or even some that never come here period!) that are willing to fork out the dough for a commission from JB yet never post a message on his board.

Not that I'm knocking it, mind you! Just something I can't wrap my brain
around. I doubt JB cares either way whether or not the person signing his check posts here or not - as long as it clears!

Nicely done all around. Daredevil was always a character I wish you'd had
the opportunity to do more with.
