I like that Michael doesn't always have the exact
same headband or wristbands on.
***
Yes, I felt this was an important element, as it
reflected the constantly shifting nature of the mystical
forces he manipulated. So his costume would
shift and change from issue to issue.
And, honest, it had nothing to do with me not
checking how I had drawn him in the previous
issue!!

Very cool!
Shaman was my least favorite Alpha until the JB back-up stories began to flesh out his origins. I loved how initially he was a very reluctant hero more centered in the science of the "white man". Once I started to get how his bag worked I was hooked and convinced he must be one of the most powerful heroes in the Mvvvvl universe.

I think I have mentioned before that, around 15 years ago, I came within hailing distance of "returning" to Alpha Flight. An openly Gay editor, up at Marvel, contacted me about an idea he had for a series with Northstar teamed with another character. I worked out some ideas, and we agreed on a game plan for the book. Then we submitted the proposal to the Powers That Were. It was rejected, based, we were told, on me asking "too much money" to do it. (For pencils, inks and script I was asking half what the Kubert bros. were getting just for pencils!)
It was pretty sad and obvious that the real reason the project was rejected was that the PTW were afraid to do a series with an openly homosexual lead.
============================================================ =
And then, in 1994 after Alpha Flight ended a Northstar mini-series appears.

That may be the best Shaman you've ever drawn. Very impressive.

hehe..unlike some commissions, I knew exactly where this commission was going by the title alone..great stuff. Alhpa Flight as characters hold some reasonance. Until there is a Shaman figure to complete my JB Aplha Flight action figure collection, this will do nicely.

I always loved those shots of Michael sticking the entire length
of his arm into a bag that appeared to be about 10 inches deep!
If THAT didn't tell you something fishy was going on in that bag
nothing would!

JB, I couldn't even begin to verbalize how much of a thrill it was seeing Shaman when I popped in here.
Above and beyond the excellent rendition of the former Alpha Flight mystic, the simple fact of the matter is that more than your presence on X-Men, Namor or any other Marvel title (beside perhaps FF), it is your Alpha Flight that I've missed the most over the years.
I read your thoughts on the characters, but Alpha Flight had something and it was and is a favorite comic of mine.
Thanks for sharing this commission with us and to hell with whoever owns it.

JB, Great job -- I always love when you had Shaman pull something out of his bag. The mind fills in the rest of the "totem" pole he is pulling out. Very nice.
+++++++++++++
Something I didn't get around to addressing was the rather disturbing notion of what might happen if some idiot turned it inside-out!
+++++++++++++
Why do I remember this taking place in your later issues on the title?
I remember Smart Alec in # 12 looking in the bag and I remember someone turning it inside-out and all sorts of crazy magic flying around. Somewhere in #25-28?

It was turned inside-out near the end of your run and started to expand and absorb everything. A more thorough investigation of what truly was inside would have been pretty cool - maybe AF's more mystical version of the exploration of the Negative Zone.
