Wow!

To see AURORA by Byrne again...just wow...and this is the Aurora that I loved before the haircut and yellow costume.

Aurora is probably the prettiest woman JB has ever drawn IMO.

I'm not that familiar with the character.  How did the haircut come about, and was it a big deal at the time?  On the subject of hair, is it a big deal with editors when an artists decides to mess with a hairstyle?

Some hairstyles are iconic.  The spitcurl on superman for instance can't be messed with(although what was up with the mullet?)  I seem to recall some hoopla when Diana had her hair short for a bit when Ordway was on the book as well

After  a fight with her brother Northstar Aurora attemtped to distance herself from him and turned to Walter Langkowski to modify her powers-at the same time she cut her hair and changed her costume.

As to whether it was a big deal I guess it all depends on if you like short hair. Personally I thought Jeanne Marie's hair helped make her extra gorgeous so it was a shock...though not as big a one as when Annihlus beat Alica Masters to a pulp and her hair got shaved off...it was years before he hair "grew back".
