Gerry,

I think that the red writing was done with a red pencil, and along pencil
notations, it can be erased.

Great images of the originals, btw.

If there are so many doubts on this original is due to this text posted last
year at Comicart-L, the Yahoo group list on original art:

________________

Hi Terry,
I thought you and your visitors might be interested in this story from the
FOX affiliate in Dallas, TX.

Press this link.

Short Version: Inside a coloring book, a North Texas family bought at a
garage sale what turned out to be original art boards from the ³Avengers²
series from 1964. Didn¹t know what they had, so they took it to a local
auction house where they found out the drawings were reported stolen
from DFW airport earlier this year. Mom & Dad are promptly arrested,
then released while the investigation continues. I think Heritage Galleries
has the goods now.

Anyway, feel free to post the link on any message boards or on your site.
To be honest, I¹m trolling for hits on our website, but I feel it¹s a story
your viewers would like!

Thanks,

For those of you that have collected original work at high prices, do you trust ebay? Or do you need to know the background of the piece?

The thing that would bother me is, there is very little in the description, like where did he get it, what's the background history on the piece. But is this the way most original artwork is sold?

Is there a place to get original comic art verified?

Unless it is being sold by a reputable art dealer or auction house, I would never buy expensive high end art off of eBay.

One thing that always rears its ugly head in these situations: A lot of Kirby's art was stolen from the Marvel warehouses by the time they started returning it.  The majority, as I understand it. (Though I'm not sure it applies to books this old) If this piece had passed through the hands of either Kirby or Ayers,  chances are they would have signed them. (like the other pages shown here).

I find it interesting that the people who bought it at a garage sale were arrested on suspicion of theft, when I'm not sure that the people who reported it stolen could show a clear provenance for it.

But I suppose that is a moot point. Even in the fine art market, people don't seem to care whether a work was stolen at some point, as long as the proper owner doesn't show up to reclaim it.
