What do you think of Gardner's uniform JB?

••

Not crazy about it -- especially as a GL uniform. The Silver Age Green
Lantern Corps, as designed by Gil Kane, wore just about the classiest
uniforms out there. The black and green -- a superhero wearing a
secondary color! -- was so strong, and those amazing white gloves!
Plus, as with so many Kane costumes, the lines followed the form of the
body, instead of fighting it.

This outfit looks like a jumble sale by comparison. None of the pieces fit
together. Nothing draws the eye to a cohesive whole. As something a
(drain bamaged) jerk like Gardner would design, sure, I guess it works.
But as something that has to be drawn a hundred times an issue. . . .   not
so much!

I don't really know a whole lot about Guy Gardner so this commission inspired me to look up some info on the web about him.  I was very surprised to find that he debuted in 1968!  I figured he had only been around for 20 years or so.  I also see that his first appearance is included in Showcase Presents: Green Lantern vol 3 which is in my stack of Showcases and Essentials yet to be read.  Cool.

Guy was a very different character when introduced!

In fact, all kidding aside, one of the unsettling things about this character is
that he really is brain damaged, and yet everyone up at DC seems
content to leave him so. You know. For fun.

I was really just getting into GL when Guy was reintroduced during the CRISIS.  I loved that he had a different uniform that said "Green Lantern -- but NOT a member of the Corps" - since he was sort of a "special agent" of the Guardians at the time.

A defining scene for Guy is in LEGENDS when the crowd gathers after he saved the plane and he very roughly uses his ring to shove them all back - flying off with an "F you" attitude.

Loved it.

A John Byrne Guy Gardner / GL sci-fi space adventure would be awesome.

Love this commission, but don't care for the character.

I read the original story back in the 60s, and didn't "get" it when he was re-introduced as a jerk.

And who designed this costume?

As much as Guy has been abused physically and mentally over the years, he must have a healing factor on par with Wolverine.

Andrew, I'm not 100% sure on who designed the costume, but Joe Staton was the artist on GL at the time of his reintroduction. I'm thinking it was either Staton or Perez (who handled him on Crisis) who designed the look.

I would agree that it is one or the other, and I could see reasons why it could be either of them.

I remember seeing some artwork from Crisis that showed Guy in the classic
GL Corps uniform, but it was adjusted to show him in the "jacket costume." I
don't remember where I saw this; perhaps in the Absolute Edition.

To me, Guy's look presents a problem.  The hair cut is a classic, but it is so outdated.  Problem is that altering it really changes to look of the character.  And I love him the way he is...

Very nice JB. Love his facial expression.
