I cannot help but wonder how much is Geoff Johns and how much of this is the DC Comics higher ups? What do you guys think??
-----------
All of their books are like that. *shrugs* I don't care what they do to Superman, Batman, Flash and WW, they'll always be infantile characters in my mind.

Johns is very hit or miss with me. I either really like what he is doing or just can't stand it. I am a huge fan of the Flash so I am going to read this series and hope it works out.
In saying that I do wish they would have left Wally as the Flash and moved Barry into a supporting role in some way or to another town (if they were so bent on bringing him back).

<<<But I'd be willing to give Johns the benefit of the doubt - maybe all is
not as it initially appears
---
I see this sentiment a lot, and it's never true. These days in comics, what
you see is what you get.>>>
I have to agree. I came to that realization with the last few chapters of
SINS PAST during JMS's Spider-Man run. (And I STILL can't believe that
there was no twist that revealed that no, the story WASN'T so obvious--
and ill-conceived--after all.)
But Geoff Johns has impressed me a lot over the last few years, and I'm
really enjoying his work on Green Lantern, so I'm inclined to give him a bit
more leeway than I would most of the other "hot" writers of the moment.

I agree with my man Glenn.
As for "I'm too busy working with ME just now, thanks!"
Thank you, JB, very much!

As Derek mentioned on the previous page, Johns knows how to tell a good comicbook story, but the violence he injects is more than a little off-putting.
To show how heroic the main character is you must have him overcome a truly evil antagonist, but the EVIL should be implied rather than graphically forced down your throat.
I enjoy his stories but the blood and cursing is unnecessary. He needs a stronger EDITORIAL figure.

I don't know that its really something 'dark' in Barry's past at this point. With only one issue out, I don't know how its going to be played. But it doesn't seem all that out of place. If a new character on Law and Order or CSI got asked why he became a cop and he said it was because his father was framed for his mother's murder, I wouldn't find that bizarre or off-putting. Its just a character detail. If Barry is portrayed as haunted by it or something, then yeah, that would be a problem with his characterization.
On the other hand, I found Waid's 'Barry had an evil twin' revelation out of left field far more troublesome. Especially when he made Reverse Flash, and the new Reverse Kid Flash into descendants of said twin. I find this new revelation a lot less stupefying than that one.

When I read that bit with Barry's parents, I didn't find it as shocking because I really don't know anything about Barry Allen's origin. Reading this thread has opened my eyes a bit. I do think Johns is the best writer in DC today and understands good characterization, so I trust he'll do the right thing.

JB, are you saying the Flash Rebirth series is just another fan turned pro product?

I am also giving the story a chance here. It was just the first part of the story, and it could be like some of you suggested that Barry solves the crime and frees his dad.
