This strikes me as more masturbatory crap. Very much about the writer rather than the characters (it's Chris Claremont's X-Men!!). Obviously not something for the not-yet-committed reader.•• If there is any writer who has earned his name above the title, actually or metaphorically, it has to be Chris on any X-title.

So nice to hear that acknowledged. No further judgment needs to be made about his talent to acknowledge that he has certainly achieved something special in his association with the X-Men.

If we assume that the claws do not telescope into the
housings on the backs of his gloves (or hands,
apparently, according to this image), they have to get up
into his forearms somehow. Which means his wrist joint
cannot be anything like normal -- and normal is what we
see in that drawing.
I'm assuming they were on his gloves which burnt off. I'm
with you JB if you make them a "mutant" power at least
give him mutated forearms to accommodate them.
They're taking questions between now and Sunday to ask
Chris about the book, maybe you could ask him? ;-)

Agreed. If he hasn't earned this, who has? It's not my cup of tea. He lost me with Jean fantasizing about Logan and her I love Scott, but I keep turning back to Logan. Please. However, looking at the preview for issue 2, I liked how Cyclops' leadership was displayed.
Whether I like it or not, I don't begrudge his right to do it. It's not like it's the regular universe. If you don't like what he's doing you can just ignore it.
The idea is Claremont doing the X Men as if he never left. Let him do what he wants to do. If enough people like it the book will kep going. If not do it won't.

I can't help wondering that if (and that's a big "IF") this book turns out to be a huge hit (sales wise) and ends up out selling the three in continuity core X-titles, how would this effect the in continuity X-books. Would the current editorial regime reevaluate their current direction they are taking the X-books in or would business continue as usual? Would the Forever continuity become the main continuity?

Yeah, that's enough to tip me into buying it-- even though I'd abandoned the X-Men long before this "juncture".
This isn't exactly getting the Beatles back together-- but it has some advantages as far as trying to "recapture the magic" goes... Since the X-Men are just lines on paper, they're in exactly as good a shape as Mr. Claremont needs them to be-- no X-Man has to miss a beat, loosen up, get back into voice.
The blessing and the "hard part" are that it's all in his hands and up to him.

I like how it is coming out every other week. So if you like this book you will be in good shape. If the story keeps up like it did in issue #1 I would push for this to be in continuity and have the X-Men Legacy book be the "alternate" reality. Not that it would every happen!

616? 616? I haven't read much Xmen or Avengers since before the whole House of M , Super hero registration Act...STUFF!, but I have seen all these differant Marvel numbered Universes come up. Could someone, briefly, explain?

Before I'll believe that an alternate reality title is going to outsell the main books, I'm going to have to see it. I mean on a regular basis. And I've seen how low the sales have gotten on the core titles.
Bottom line, Claremont has the chances. Perhaps he'll prove me wrong and it will be a big hit. Now that I think of it, I guess the Ultimate universe qualifies as an alternate reality. As I recall, ULTIMATES was a ver big seller. We shall see.
