   I'm curious as to how Kirby came by the iconic appearance of Johnny Storm's powers that we've known for so long.  It seems that we're in an age where that appearance is no longer in use.

Beautiful commission as usual, JB.

One thing I don't understand about the current man on fire version of the Human Torch is how can one copyright a man on fire?

This version cannot be duplicated because it would be clear that it was visually a rip on a character marvel owns which means somebody like DC couldn't do their own Human Torch variant in the same visual manner.

However, I'm positive they can go the man on fire route without any worries about being sued.

That's why I love that variant/negative version you posted; not only does it look awesome but it also looks unique enough that it could be protected from use.

I would guess the visual inspiration came from something like this:



.....but I don't know that there's truly a real-life equivalent to the traditional comics depiction of the Human Torch.
