Unofficial fan pages are a violation of Facebook's guidelines.

"1. You may only administer a Page if you are an authorized representative of the subject of the Page."

http://www.facebook.com/terms_pages.php

I'm not sure if this was required when fan pages first started, but currently to make a fan page, you have to click a box that says you are an authorized representative of the subject of that page.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

You would just need to notify Facebook that the owners of the pages are not authorized to represent you.

Fan pages are fine and yes there is a disclaimer. However, where it says website, the link is to byrnerobotics.

I can see the good in a fan page but call it a fan page in the title. Knowing a lot of people who use facebook, I'm not so sure they would read the disclaimer.

There is a disclaimer on the left side of the page:

This is only a fanpage. John Byrne is NOT the creator, nor moderator of this profile

••

However, at the bottom of the page there is a block of copy that indicates I am actively involved with maintaining and editing it -- which I am not. I didn't even know it existed until yesterday.

I think "John Byrne" is the name of the group. It's strange that the moderator hasn't listed his info, though.

Facebook just uses the name of the page as the editor.

Check out this page, which is a page that sites a television show as its editor.

That's why the name of the group should be "Fans of John Byrne", to avoid any confusion.

They could work it a bit better and I can see how it could cause some confusion, but the first time I saw "become a fan" next to a celebrity's name, it was attached to four or five different pages all with the same name, so I immediately assumed that it was fan run board with no ties to name on the masthead.

Fan clubs or web pages endorsed by the person or show usually have the word "official" plastered all over the place to distinguish them from the numerous unofficial ones that have always been with us. At facebook, the difference between "become his friend" and "become his fan" is the difference between member and non-member. If the person was there, there would be an option to be their friend.

Fan clubs should always be (not that anybody stated otherwise) run by fans. I have seen fan clubs run by the artist himself and or by the artist's father. It is incorrect.

About the John Byrne fan site, I noticed that I was a member. I have reported it with a link to the forum site where JB himself dislikes it and I though it should be gone by now.
