A few thoughts on this, assuming it goes through:
- BOOM comics is dead, since their only really valuable licenses were from Disney, and presumably, they'll let them lapse. Good thing Waid kept working for Marvel.
- Finally some decent Marvel animation.
- Does this mean we'll get licensed Marvel merch in DIsney stores? This could make up for the tragic loss of WB stores a few years back.
- I doubt this will affect Marvel's content. My surmise would be that Disney will view Marvel and its characters as a brand aimed at teens and young adults, to supplement its library of kids fare. It would nice to see Marvel with an additional, robust children's line, though.
- If this gives Marvel the ability to go back and reprint those classic Disney comics (i.e. Carl Barks), that alone will be worth it.
- I doubt, frankly, that Disney really cares much about the comics that are being published. I think they're far more interested in merchandising the characters, and in the films from Marvel Studios. You know, the things that are actually profitable.

It'll be interesting to see if Disney considers the publishing branch of Marvel to be even viable financially, given Disney's terrible track record of these kinds of things.

Good point, Steve. Though Disney may view Marvel as a brand aimed at that particular demographic, it raises the question as to the degree in which Disney will let certain things go unabated. I'm not sure if they would want some of Marvel's recent product to be associated with their name. Then again, they own ABC and have had shows such as "Wife Swap", so who knows?

Is this huge? As an industry outsider to the entertainment industry what does this mean? Will Marvel Comics be drastically changed?

Also, I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall in the Marvel offices for the next couple months.

Marvel is being bought for billions of dollars because of the earning potential of movies and toys and video games. I will be pleasantly surprised if Disney has given any thought to the comicbook end of things.

I imagine this is much more for the movie rights and tie-in and such.... I'd love for them to do something animated with them... I've just at the opportunity to work on that!
Another potentially BIG piece of this puzzle is Marvel's deal with Unversal. IOA hare has a whole Marvel themed land.... I can't imagine Disney ok'ing that once the deal expires....
