Funny thing with Ultron - the first time I remember reading something with him in was in an  oooold Avengers book that closed with a shot of Ultron's head and the opening to "Kublai Khan". I remember reading the poem and thinking wow, this is sophisticated stuff! Flash forward ten or so years to my final year at high school when we dissected the poem in English Literature - the two subjects were inextricably linked in my mind, and my Eng Lit teacher had a weed on with me for bringing it up. Aaaah, memories...

Great piece, chief.

Historical note: It was "Ozymandius".

I think that was Watchmen not Avengers.

Sorry, couldn't resist the sophomoric humour....

That's it! "Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair...". So where did I read "In Xanadu did Kublai Khan a stately pleasure dome decree...". Guess the old memory is going, after all. Thanks for the pick-up.

We were always taught "o-zee-mun-DIE-us". Guess it's a northern hemisphere/southern hemisphere thing?

Thanks for the response, JB; of course, I'm in no position to offer you any such work, but I can't imagine some magazine's art director not looking at something like this Mayan temple and just going APESHIT.  Yours is a talent which should be more widely recognized, and utilized to far greater exposure than this humble Forum, chief.

Oh, by the way, it's "Ozymandias", everybody.

Curiously enough, btw, as I was drawing that part I found myself thinking of the original artist. How some anonymous, long deceased Mayan sculptor that chiseled it out of a piece of stone, and here I was, perhaps thousands of years later, copying it.

_______________________

It's interesting, but the Greeks would recognize a buiding done by Iktinos, or a statue done by Praxiteles or Pheidias, or a painting done by Apollodorus; and all this in the 4th and 5th century BC. And yet, other cultures at the same time or later wouldn't. The artist in other civilizations would forever remain as an anonymous person.
