Of course JB's faces look the same. Superman's face always looks like Superman's face, Batman's face always looks like Batman's face, Wonder Woman's face always like Wonder Woman face, etc.
That's a good thing.

I loved the original Superman piece this is based on. I believe this new one is even better.

I, too, am quite fond of the original Superman promo piece. I was quite ready to declare my devotion to that previous image, regardless of how good this new one looks, until I followed JB's link to the original piece. Seeing them side by side, the new one is far superior!
Nice one, JB!!!

Great image, mr. Byrne!
I seem to detect some Terry Austin in the inks... might be just my impression.
Another thing that I noticed (and was briefly discussing it the other day with a friend) is the change in the way JB draws noses. In the 70's/80's sometimes we could only see little more than the nostrils (specially in women), but later it tends to have more "mass". Artistically, I think it's an improvement but also a break with one of JB's trademarks from times of yore (at least for me).

When I look at my "old stuff", Armindo, I feel like the more I break from my "trademarks" the better!

Actually, i have never heard anyone complain that the faces looked the same.
----------------------------------
As I recall, a lot of that complaining started back at the beginning of JB's FF run, because people thought that Frankie Raye looked too much like Jean. Regardless of what you think of JB's facial repertoire then, its certainly a completely different kettle of fish now. But even by the end of JB's FF run, if you compare the faces of Sue, She-Hulk, Jean (when she came back), etc. they're very different.

John, is there any piece(s) from the past that you think you have never been able to match in terms of quality -- a piece that is so good that it makes you think, Holy shit, how did I do that?! and wonder if you'll ever be able to draw something as good as that again? If so, what is it?
Flip side: Is there any piece of yours that makes your skin crawl with disappointment? If so, what's the piece?

This piece is definitely an improvement over the original. The right hand looks more natural and I prefer this expression on Superman's face.
