JB, I was wondering what staging you were thinking of for Batman and Robin.  Maybe that's not the right way to phrase it but on the source cover, I happen to get almost a vampire feel from them, like they're recoiling from the light or trying to shield themselves from it to remain inconspicuous.  I don't get that you were going for the same thing in your interpretation and just wondered if you saw the original the same way as me?

Love the background.  It feels like a noir-ish city from the 40's.

Ha! Took me until JUST now to find the (seemingly inevitable) missed black. It's just under Robin's right fist. Have to fix that upon the morrow!

...They even made an attempt to get the unmoving "shadow" on the
front of the mask!
===========

I started reading DC on a regular basis post Crisis. This is the one
thing that has been left behind that I really miss. I grew up with reruns
of the late 60's and late 70's Filmation Batman cartoons which were, I
believe, based on Carmine Infantino's model. A part of me will always
feel that unmoving shadow should be there. Ditto with Captain
America even though it was used less.

This piece is great JB. I'd hate to think how hard it was to get the
bullet logo just right.

••

People have asked before how I do the logos on these kinds of commissions, and my usual response is "trade secret". Perhaps it's time to "come clean"!

The usual drill is this: I scan the appropriate logo at hi-res, say 300 dpi, then in Photoshop I reduce key elements to a fine outline. Certain key elements, like the DC bullet in this case, or the Comics Code stamp I leave "solid".

Then I print out the result, and using my photocopier duplicate them onto the board on which I will draw the commission. I fill in the details with ink as I draw the piece.

Here's a low-res version:

Sometimes, if I plan to have elements of the drawing cross in front of the logo, I will gray it out, and then set the photocopier to make a very light copy.

If it's an "imaginary" logo, I build it from a combination of "real" elements, and parts I create in Photoshop. Then the process becomes the same…

This way, the customer gets a recreation of the logo that is as accurate as possible, while still being mostly "hand drawn".

Thanks for sharing, Chief. I love the cover recreations/reinterpretations. They are almost always iconic covers and it is cool to see your take on them.

I was wondering about how you made all the 'printed' blurb look so brilliant. Thanks for the insight. I think you do a great job of finding the right compromise between having it come from your pen but also look sufficiently like the printed original.

What a great commission of one of my favorite Batman eras. This also is one of my favorite Batman logos along with the 241-289 logo. What a excellent background. I love how well you "pulled off" the spotlight! I almost want to squint. Envy x 2.

That's pretty awesome JB!

Is this similar to how you would do it for a published cover? Do all
titles and text exist solely in a computer or is it a combination?
