The one thing I find about being freelance is that I miss people, so I have BBC Radio 4 on when I'm working. Radio 4 isn't 'talk radio' as the term is generally used, but is almost entirely human speech. I have to turn it off when there's a drama on, however, since I generally find this requires more concentration than a documentary or discussion programme. Doesn't matter what the documentary or discussion is about, I just find the basic sound of human speech preferable to a silent house.

As far as listening to music as being capital B-bad, it didn't seem to hurt Jack Kirby's creativity any. Everyone has their own way of working, there's no right or wrong as long as the work gets done.

That is very true, and I don't think anyone here is disputing it.

However, that said, over the years the following scenarios have been repeated several times:

A fellow artist asks me how I get so much done. I ask about their work habits, and invariably there is a TV set in their studio and/or they start some time after noon and work until the wee hours of the morning.

In the case of the TV, I suggest they get rid of it (or at least turn it off for a few days), and a while later I get a call saying how much more work they are producing.

In the case of the work schedule, I suggest they try starting early. I try to hit the board no later than 8am each day. There will be protests of "I am just not a morning person." My answer is "A morning person is someone was wasn't up until 6am chasing a deadline." So they try it, and again there is that call about how much more work they're getting done.

I don't use the TV very often, most days its just music. If I am watching a movie and I stop to watch a favorite scene, I use that time to take a break and stretch, which I tend to forget to do.

I once sat down and drew for eleven hours without stopping except to
pee and get something to drink. I had no clue I was at the board for
so long. I had fourteen missed calls and never heard the phone. It's
really an amazing thing artists can do. I don't know any other
profession or hobby, that asks for that much concentration.

Acting requires more. At least we pencil pushers don't have to do our work surrounded by a horde of people whispering and coughing and rustling candy wrappers while we try to stay in the scene!

Is my computer misbehaving, or is everybody else seeing those weird code lines in Eric's posts?

I seemingly can't have anything on when I'm doing thumbs or layouts (or hand-lettering, if it's called for).  Penciling, I prefer having the radio on. Inking is much more of a physical than mental act, for me, so that's when the television used to come on.  Of course, I don't have a TV in the house anymore, but I also don't ink much anymore...

Sim does tend towards the idea of absolute truth, and based on his writings, that extends to absolute universal best practice.  With something as mutable as creativity, process and environment is 100% personal.  I've always done my best and most prolific drawing at the kitchen table, pages taped to a masonite board.  Meanwhile, my drawing table is moved around frequently, searching for a spot that makes it most inviting, but never finding one.
