That stinks. Love the essentials. Quite a number of the titles being
printed were either in or getting to when I was starting to read then as a
youngster.

Perhaps Marvel will make more of its back catalog available digitally. I noticed an increase in classic CAPTAIN AMERICAs in time for the movie.

I haven't seen new Showcase volume from DC in a while either.

The second volume of Jonah Hex came out recently.

Really irritated about the Essentials getting cancelled.
I was hoping to get a few more Hulk volumes, more Spider-Man and FF sets too.  A lot of them were getting to some popular runs.
Haven't been impressed with the last few volumes of X-Men, X-Factor or Wolverine...looks like they just paid an intern off the street to scan colored books on a copy machine.  It's all greyscale, not black & white.

Essentials probably lost a lot of sales with the rise of discount TPB sites; why buy Essentials when you can get softcover Masterworks, in color, for 50% off the cover price? (Depending on the sale, anywhere between $10-$13 dollars for the softcover versions)

I bought the first four volumes of FF and a few others when they first came out, but I was never a fan of black & white reprints of material that was originally in color.

ESSENTIALS has been a fantastic format for me.  I got to read a lot of complete storylines and series I had never seen before and was introduced to quite a few series/characters I probably never would've tried otherwise....and they're at a price I almost can't turn down!  At comic shows you can usually find multiple dealers selling ESSENTIAL volumes for less than $10 a piece (3 for $15 is common) and I've even paid as little as $3 for some.

Those are the only things I've bought from Marvel in the last couple years.  What a shame.

Back to the dollar bins for me, then. At least I managed to get most of the ESSENTIAL volumes which counted while they were available. Seems as they're opening one door, they're shutting and locking down all the rest.

With discounts that deep, it sounds like they weren't selling very well at regular price. Not a good thing, especially for a product that takes up so much retailer shelf space for a small return.

I loved the Essential volumes.  I rarely buy the contemporary work, unless a creator like Stern, Simonson or Romita Jr. is working on a book.

As most have said, it was the only book(s) I looked forward to, that were actual comic books, that felt like comic books from the company.

Eighteen years for a reprint line is a really impressive run.  Not bad for the cheap alternative to Marvel Masterworks and the DC Archives.
