Here is another article about Marana's response with more direct quotes.

To an extent. A lot of the sexualized images in comics are just juvenile. "Tee hee, boobies and crotch shots!" Manara's Spider-Woman looks like someone ready to get fucked from behind, to put it bluntly.

To be just as blunt. Maybe that is what you see Michael. I've looked at the image several times. Not once did I see it that way.

Perhaps you need to read more illustrated porn?

There's more?!

To be honest, I'm with Anthony on this one.  Manara too.

One thing I have found is that it's unhelpful for an artist to be squeamish about the Human Body.  A juvenile response is something we should never have.

I wasn't aware they made split-crotch superhero costumes.

(I am reminded of an old "joke": HE: Sorry, if I'd known you were a virgin, I would have taken more time. SHE: If I'd know you had more time, I would have taken off my pantyhose.)

I get the sinking feeling that the most immature reactions to this cover is going to be from the "ADULTS". There wasn't this much outrage when Batman's son was drawn horribly, and brutally murdered. He was a child. Manara is right, we worry and fret about very strange things.

One thing is certain. This book is getting a ton of free publicity.

It isn't that it hasn't happened before. It's just that it's getting very tiring. And it's a terrible drawing. Spider-Woman is supposed to wear a costume, not body paint.

What I don't get is how nobody seems to think women are attractive unless they are highly sexualized. When I was a young comic reader, I thought the Wasp was gorgeous. In her costume that covered her whole body, and just standing there in a normal pose.

Manara's response was, "I'm only drawing women as sexual, because evolution designed them to be sexual." I'm a huge fan of Manara and his erotica, but even I can't deny that his response is pretty sexist.

Michael>>I'm a huge fan of Manara and his erotica, but even I can't deny that his response is pretty sexist. <<

He's talking about biology there, not behavior based on socially assigned gender roles, and discrimination based thereon.  Mammals are universally sexual creatures.  Humans in particular do not have a heat cycle, and thus display sexual characteristics year-round.  That's an evolutionary trait.  It is not sexist to recognize this or appreciate it.  It is sexist to discriminate or otherwise objectify someone because of it.  Had Manara just drawn a sexy butt throughout the story and focused on that instead of the character or story,  that would be sexist.

Had the evolutionary dice come down a little differently, we'd be complaining that Manara had drawn her buttocks an immodest shade of red:

I recall a Trek board ages ago where someone asked "why would there be sexy Vulcans?"
A:  Because sexy is logical.
