Aw. This hits me hard. My fondest memory is when he was at Mid-Ohio Con and they had to move his table to accommodate the long line of fans!

Great stuff. The memories. Ah, the memories!

Loved his work on those early issues of GI Joe...he gave that book such
a cool energy that was just plain lost after his departure. I'm very sad to
hear this news.

RIP

A few years ago I corresponded with him via email because I wanted to order a book he made about his experiences during 9/11.  The book was out of print and I wanted to purchase a copy.  Unfortunately he didn't have any on hand.  Was hoping some one out there knows where I could purchase a copy.

His version of the Hulk made an indelible impression on my life and I endlessly copied his version of the Hulk while I learned how to draw.  I loved how he drew the Hulk and to me his version was the best and the only version in my mind that stands the test of time.  He made the Hulk less primitive looking and more sympathetic.  I remember when he would draw scenes with the our favorite  Jade Giant petting a deer or interacting with Sam Wilson or Rick Jones.  Trimpe made the character better and humanized him.

I told Paul Kupperberg about Herb's death, and he was shocked. I've known Paul a long time, and I had not previously seen him so taken aback.

He and Herb had both been at a con in Secaucus, NJ over the weekend, and they had spent some time chatting. There was no indication anything was wrong, or likely to be.

A reminder, if such be needed, of the razor's edge upon which all of us live.

I remember Herb doing sketches on an overhead projector live on stage during "An Evening with Stan Lee" at the Roundhouse in London, sometime in the mid-seventies.

Growing up reading black and white UK reprints of his work, it was hard enough sometimes finding current US editions, let alone back issues. I was suitably thrilled when I discovered this beauty in my local second-hand bookshop.

RIP.

"One of my all time favorites. Herb Trimpe was the
artist on the first comic that I bought monthly, G.I.
Joe. I remember when I realized that Mike Vosburg was
staying and Trimpe wasn't coming back to G.I. Joe and
how I was actually angry because I liked Trimpe's art
better."

Ditto. I started "collecting" comics with G. I. Joe
#11; however, Defenders #80 by Herb Trimpe was the
first issue of the Defenders I ever read or had. It
was probably my first exposure to his work.

So sad.

And now I cannot help but wonder, "Who's next?"

Sad news. I remember reading an interview he gave the Comic Buyer's Guide in which he stated that the then-current regime at Marvel were no longer hiring him for work, as they felt the readers were more interested in the latest "superstar" artists such as Mcfarlane and Liefield.

He was supposedly encouraged to develop an art "style" more like theirs.

Outrageous. Such disrespect for a veteran artist who had contributed so much to the company. His Hulk (as well as Buscema's) will always be MY Hulk, and for me, the definitive interpretation of the character.

His artistic output will continue to be valued, praised and serve as a continuing inspiration for generations to come, while the stuff that the one-time "hot" artists generated will be relegated to lining the bottoms of bird cages (if even that).

RIP Herb Trimpe, and thank you.

Got this in the mail six years ago, when Herb donated his talent to a school fundraiser.  Make a donation to the school, and Herb would send a character head sketch on a postcard.  He was doing things like that all the time, apparently, always quick to help people out however he could.

And I can't tell you how cool it was to come home from work and have this waiting in my mailbox:
