They're pushed pretty high up, there.•• Thanks for pointing that out. Others might not have understood what I was referencing.

At what point(s) did "the Code" see the book? Could they veto it at any stage? I'm just thinking that if they saw the uncolored version, it might not have seemed problematic, as opposed to seeing it in color.

Hate. That. Picture.
Definitely NOT a fan of Quitely. At. All.

And for some people, that has become one of the defining Superman images and stories. Unfathomable.
Superman taking a moment to appreciate and admire his city as the sun rises, enjoying a vantage point that no one else in the world can. That's an expression that says, "if this isn't nice, I don't know what is."
Quitely's not a traditional superhero artist, sure, and he's one of those artists that either clicks for people or he doesn't. I don't think there's much middle ground on him, or for Grant Morrison as a writer, either. You love it or hate it, I guess.

That's an expression that says, "if this isn't nice, I don't know what is."••• Maybe you can tell me why his cape is draped across the cloud. Beyond the facial expression, which I can allow as open to interpretation, this drawing fails on a mechanical level. Superman is not Peter Pan. He cannot literally sit on a cloud. To accomplish the pose, as shown, he would have to be hovering in that position. Why would SUPERMAN, with everything that means, do that?

That was how Cockrum got away with his nearly-naked Dragonfly character. No one told the Code those costume lines indicated bare (red) skin. But Jean is different. I can't imagine they assumed she was smuggling cantaloupes. They were, after all, basically paid to have dirty minds.

The Code made me take nipples off statues that were drawn from real statues!

No idea if Quitely tried to draw this with the cape behaving the way it really would in such a situation, but I'm sure it was a matter of going with whatever looked best. Like purposely using wrong perspective because the correct perspective doesn't look right in an illustration.
Short answer, I'd guess he's hovering in a seated position, just to have the feeling that he's seated on a cloud, since it makes for an interesting cover illustration.

That SUPERMAN cover has no business in the same thread as that X-MEN cover.
