Peter Martin: It's strange; he looks like he must be fond of a donair or three.

*****

At the risk of instigating thread drift, Peter: As an American--as an American who still sees Canada as our closest ally in war, in peace, and in snacking--I'm very proud to say that I've had poutine on several glorious occasions. I've had Tim Horton's. My next Canadian food objective, and I blame Trailer Park Boys for this, is the donair.

That is all; carry on.

Lived in Canada for 22 years and never had nor heard of a "donair".

Calgary has had a tornado every once in awhile lately.

I've never had a Donair that I know of, lots of perogies with cabbage rolls, wonder if they're seen as 'Canadian' food?

Uniquely Canadian foods to me:
Hawkins Cheezies (if they sit too long they 'build character')
Nanaimo Bars (home-made but showing up in bakeries and shops more all the time)
Hawaiian Pizza (boldly going)
Salmon casserole (this might be because my grandfather fished whenever he had the chance to, and also hunted so we had venison and moose).

The maple donuts, maple back bacon, maple whatever and poutine are all eastern Canadian things to me, like saying we all eat lobster like others eat chicken. Maybe in the maritime provinces they do. I have still only had poutine once, at PFK (Poulet Frit du Kentucky, KFC in English), in Quebec. Didn't make me want more particularly.

A tornado is not a hurricane.

Rebecca, Hawaiian pizza is one of those that has crossed borders - it is my favourite pizza & available in most, if not all, pizza restaurants  in the U.K.

The rest? Yeah never seen them until I started to visit Canada. Interesting to see the list you mention as being East Canadian foods. I’ve only been working in the West - Vancouver & Edmonton and Poutine, bacon with maple syrup are everywhere

They're 'eastern invaders'. I really liked some 'poutine flavoured' potato chips (crisps), might've been one of those 'limited edition' flavours though. :^(

Talk about invasive species. Tim Horton's crossed the river here a couple decades ago and is now on practically every street corner.
Lines are around the buildings in the morning. I think it has put Dunkin' Donuts out of the coffee business around here!

I’d never heard of Tim Horton’s until I first came to Canada last year. Wow is that chain everywhere!

Donairs (or more correctly 'Halifax Donairs') are primarily an East Coast thing.   Once you hit Ontario it's almost all Gyros (in all combinations of beef, lamb, or blamb), which is closer to a Turkish/German Doner Kebab but still not quite.  West of Ontario I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the German speaking areas served something more like the real Doner.

Don't even get me started on the differences between a Shawarma and  Shish-tawook! (there's parts of Ontario where the name and the actual item have been completely swapped)

Because they are delicious. Doubly or triply so after
some quality imbibing.

I Love all the pure hatred for Donald Trump because obviously a haggard old mentally impaired drunk that cannot waddle more than a few steps without letting out a blood curdling scream and falling over on her slovenly body would be a much better leader for America.
