JB, like a musician grown used to improvising or jamming, did you eventually develop over time a set of "moves" that you could reliably rely upon when needing to be spontaneous and feeling uncertain about the next direction?

Maybe! My process has become so ingrained and unconscious that I scarcely know I’m doing it.

The “falling out of the pencil” moments to which I refer from time to the me.

Thank you, Steve, Elsewhen just beings me back to the days when reading X-men wasn't a chore but an adventure and it was fun. It was....Uncanny.

Fascinating ... I've always been process fixated about creating comics, and have wondered about workflow principles like, is it okay to have a repository of go-to backgrounds like cityscapes, crowd scenes, explosions with debris or mountain ranges that are reproduced/repurposed for corner-cutting or deadline meeting tricks of the trade? Is that something fellow creators would call each other out on as colleagues? If so, is that more acceptable these days with the digital evolution in production?   < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

When working on Superman I considered drawing a large, heavily detailed view of Metropolis. A perspective shot, about 4’x4’ that would be looking straight down in the middle of the bottom of the piece, fanning out to almost horizontal at the top.

This played to my need for consistency—different shots of Superman flying over the city would confirm the same buildings were always in the same place.

Fantastic idea ... and a ton of work!
But over time you would recoup your investment for sure.
Your fans would notice and certainly appreciate it, that kind of thoughtfulness is how you keep 'em sticky! < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

I suspect some quarters would treat it with the same disdain that would be visited upon the models, later on. The word “lazy” would be trotted out each time I used a slice of that Metropolis drawing as a background. No consideration would be allowed for the amount of work that went into creating the master shot.

That would be a fun project, a 3D model of Metropolis to use as reference for relationships of buildings in the background. None of the actual images yielded from it would identical, so it might pass the mustard easier.   < id="protanopia"> < id="deuteranopia"> < id="tritanopia">

I built a 3d model of Metropolis that I used in LAB RATS. It was unmapped, and built mostly because I thought it would be kinder to that vein in my temple if I threw together a quick and dirty model rather than drawing the absolutely stupid mess DC had made of the city at that time.

Meanwhile, I just tripped over THIS.

It’s one of those not-quite-positive “reviews” that stumbles thru a whole lot of misconceptions, any or all of which could be cleared away simply by reading these threads.

For instance, “Vanja” gets the timetable wrong, asserting that I started posting ELSEWHEN in the Forum after “negotiations” with Marvel “fell through”. In reality, Marvel only found out about this project because I started posting it here.

sigh

I was just reminded of Walter mentioning recently that Marvel turned down
a Thor book written by him and drawn by you, JB. Did that in any way inform
your decision not to take ELSEWHEN there?
